Yevhenii Oskarovich Paton was an outstanding academician, engineer, teacher and organizer of science. He devoted a significant part of his career to bridge construction, creating 35 bridge projects and publishing more than 160 scientific papers. E.O. Paton was the founder of the bridge building school in Ukraine.
In 1929, he began his work in the field of metal welding, creating the department of engineering structures, the Electrowelding Laboratory and the Electrowelding Committee. Under the leadership of Paton, the Institute of Electric Welding was founded, which became a center of fundamental research and the development of new scientific directions. Among the areas of work of the institute, it is possible to single out new industrial methods of welding pipes, main pipelines, oversized tanks, blast furnace complexes, putting into operation automatic welding installations.
