The Maidan Museum will host a discussion "Decolonization in Ukraine: Government vs Community"
02-11-2023 (15:51)

On November 7 at 18:00, the Maidan Museum together with the NGO "Expertny Corps" will hold a discussion about decolonization in Ukraine. The event will take place in the Information and Exhibition Center of the Maidan Museum (Nezalezhnosti Maidan, 18/2, Trade Union Building, 2nd floor).

Here they will talk about:

  • Main aspects of decolonization: culture, history and toponymy;
  • Decolonization as a logical continuation of decommunization processes;
  • Actions of state bodies to implement the Law on Decolonization on the ground;
  • The experience of public activists of decolonization and how they contribute to its implementation.

With the restoration of independence in 1991, decolonization processes continued gradually, with significant delays. The Revolution of Dignity was the turning point for Ukrainians to return to European identity and escape from Russian colonial influence.

After the entry into force of the Law of Ukraine "On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy" in the summer of 2023, getting rid of Russian imperial influence should reach a new level.

What this means for our country and how everything works in practice will be discussed by historians, cultural experts, public figures and government officials.

Participants of the discussion:

  • Alina Ponypalyak - candidate of historical sciences, researcher of the Ukrainian liberation movement, scientist of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, co-coordinator of the public initiative "Turn off Russian";
  • Oleg Slabospytskyi - public activist, member of the board of the National Ukrainian Youth Association (NUMO), co-coordinator of the "Public Sector of Euromaidan";
  • Vadym Pozdnyakov is a Ukrainian public activist, head of the "Svitanok" public organization, co-founder of the "Decolonization.Ukraine" and "Language.Kharkiv" projects [online access];
  • Nataliya Pavlenko - President of the Union of Ukrainian Women of America [online access];
  • Yurii Prykhodnyuk - chief specialist of the department of analysis of totalitarian regimes of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance;
  • Olga Salo - Deputy General Director of the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity;

Moderated by Tetyana Shvydchenko - historian, head of the department of general education disciplines at "Sigmund Freud University Ukraine", head of the NGO "Expertny Corps".
