The Institute belongs to the Department of Earth Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It is the first academic institution established after the declaration of independence of Ukraine and has 100 employees, including 3 doctors of science and 15 candidates of science. Scientific research at the institute is carried out in the departments of anthropogenic changes in the geological environment, ecological foundations of nature management technologies, environmental regulation, and in the measuring chemical-analytical laboratory.
The main directions of scientific research include the development of the scientific foundations of the regional environmental monitoring system, the development and justification of the methodology for choosing a strategy for the sustainable development of technogenically burdened regions of Ukraine, as well as the assessment and forecast of the environmental consequences of the use of technologies and schemes for the placement of mining production.
