Ivan Honchar museum
The building, which was given by the government in 1993 for use as Ivan Honchar Museum, and where the exposition is situated, is a listed architecture building of ХVIII – XIX centuries. History of the construction of it is closely related with the history of Kyiv and Pechersk.
Ukrainian center of folk culture “Ivan Honchar Museum” was founded on a basis of state I. M. Honchar museum and reports to Kyiv city administration. State I. M. Honchar Museum was founded in September of 1993.
Since ancient times majestic hills rising on the right bank of Dniepro River in Kyiv which cover the area far down the stream were sacred land for the mysterious civilizations, they served as a reliable shelter for spiritual asceticism, became centers of science and culture. These sacred hills were the place where temples of Ukrainian spirit were born, where immortal treasures of nation were carefully preserved for centuries, and these provided its’ invincibility, succession of the traditions, formation of the guidelines for further development.
It is symbolic and absolutely not accidentally that exactly here in the middle of the previous century with the work of a one man were established the grounds of powerful stronghold of the Ukrainians. Those open in our, new century wide door for those who desire spiritual sacrament of the nation. This devoted builder was an artist and collector Ivan Honchar (27.01.1911 - 18.06.1993) – outstanding public and cultural activist, sculptor, artist, graphic artist, collector.
Since Ivan Honchar Museum had obtained a state status and private collection of the founder was presented to the state by Honchar family, the necessity in a full multifunctional activity of this well-known in Ukraine and abroad institution increased greatly. It is well known that nowadays the spheres of influence of the museum are widely spread. The new organization-functional form of the culture institution – Museum Center – arise not only as storehouse of particular ethnic and human values and unique artifacts, but as specific complex model of spiritual and material life of the genus, tribe, society, ethnic group, nation. In this model is shown the whole complex of comprehensive world view guidelines, main components and determinant factors of the traditional being.
