Chernihiv architecture and craft in XI-XIII centuries
Information
In the XI-XIII centuries, Chernihiv experienced a period of great prosperity, especially in the Old Russian period. A powerful construction school, known for its high level of craftsmanship, was formed in the Chernihiv-Siver Principality. Particularly outstanding were the construction with the use of brick and stone, the use of plinth and ceramic details, as well as the improvement of building structures. Great attention was paid to the detailing and decoration of the buildings, such as stone carvings. Architecture, painting and various types of art combined to create a harmonious synthesis.
Other crafts that reached a high level of skill also developed in Chernihiv. Local potters, blacksmiths, bone carvers and jewelers were known for their skill. Master jewelers possessed various gold and silver processing techniques and created a variety of jewelry. Potters made ceramic dishes, including pots, bowls, cups, cheese bowls, pans and jugs. In addition, watered clay eggs, known as Easter eggs, were made, which had both domestic and artistic purposes.
The exhibition presents various exhibits that illustrate the crafts and arts of Chernigov at that time. Visitors can get acquainted with various types of building materials, decorative details, decorations, potters' products, jewelers' products and examples of blacksmithing.
